A Word from Your Pastor April 29

Dear Parishioners:

There is a Chaos Theory that suggests that when we find chaos in one part of the universe, there is order in another part of the universe that would not be possible without that chaos.  So, that would seem to indicate that someone somewhere must be very happy about our current situation because order is present in that realm as a corollary to what is going on around us!

Just look at the world around us.  The culture of our present-day society, locally and beyond, is in turmoil, denying age-old truths and justifying the most outlandish thoughts and ideas and behaviors in the name of what?   When we seek to defend so-called “traditional values,” we are looked upon as unenlightened or worse.  Chaos reigns.  So, we must seek the order that is its corollary.

The key to finding the order we seek is the Truth of our Catholic Faith that proclaims the Resurrection of Jesus.  This Divine Intervention into human affairs has put us in touch with an ultimate Order to the Universe that trumps all other chaos and disorder.  God is in charge, of this world and of life and death and New Life.  Everything in this world is destined to come to an end, but we human beings are given the capacity to engage in preparation for what comes next.

We have had many deaths and funerals of late in our community.  Over the past couple of weeks, I have personally attended to five families, including my own, who have experienced such a loss.   Each death has made me ever more aware of the fragility of our human condition and the brevity of life.  We must live each day in the awareness of the fact of our limitations.   We must also put our trust in the Lord Who leads us to the Order beyond the chaos of earthly life.

Celebrating our Golden Jubilee:  Getting to know Saint Timothy’s Community of Faith.

We are looking at St. Paul’s Letter to the Ephesians, since Ephesus was the see where St. Timothy served as Bishop.  This may offer some perspectives on the Church and the Community among whom Timothy lived and ministered.

I, then, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to live in a manner worthy of the call you have received, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another through love, striving to preserve the unity of the spirit through the bond of peace: one body and one Spirit, as you were also called to the one hope of your call; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. (Ephesians 4:1-4)

St. Paul accepts his own condition and circumstance as a prisoner for the sake of the Gospel, and he uses it to call the Ephesians to a way of life that incorporates Gospel values in their community life.  Unity and peace come from being centered on God. Love frees each member of the community to accept all others.  Hope is directed toward the fulfillment of God’s promises.  The Communion of Love, present within the community through the action of the Holy Trinity, Father, Son and Spirit, is destined for all.

The encouragement Paul offers to the Ephesians in spite of his own difficult circumstances rings true for us today.  Where there might be a temptation to despair, given all that is occurring in the world around us, our Faith and the example of the generations who lived before us invite us to cling to Hope and to trust in the continuing action of God’s Spirit among us.

2003   Congratulations to Tara Theado and Stephen Blackstone who will be married on Saturday, May 10.

2007  From the Pastor’s Desk…Marion Smithberger, who is preparing for ordination as a permanent deacon for our diocese, will become increasingly involved in parish life during the next several months.  This quarter his assignment is to observe sacramental preparation, RCIA, and adult education.  As he completes his responsibilities in his home parish of St. Peter, he will have more time to devote to our needs.  Having known Marion during my time at St. Peter, I am delighted that the diocese has assigned him to us for his internship.  The fact that both the Josephinum and the diocese consider St. Timothy to be a suitable environment in which future clergy can learn to minister says a great deal about the kind of community we are.

A Word from Your Pastor April 22

Dear Parishioners:

Last week’s celebration of the Anointing of the Sick at all Parish Masses was a real delight. It was evident that the whole community was drawn into the Mystery of the Sacrament as the priests laid hands on each of the sick and anointed them with the Oil of the Sick blessed by the Bishop during Holy Week. I find it a special privilege to touch others with the Healing Mercy of the Lord through this powerful sign of His Love. Jesus healed the sick in His public ministry, and the Church continues this in so many ways. Also impressive were the number of our members who stood for the Blessing of Health Care Workers. What a wonderful sign of the Compassion of the Lord! Our thanks to all those who are generous in their care for our brothers and sisters affected by illness.

During our Jubilee year as a Parish, we want to make plans for the future and to do what we can to anticipate needs in the physical plant of the church and school, and in the community. Some directions we have underway are the completion of the Campaign for St. Timothy by recouping the parish funds that covered interest during our years under debt (by way of the pledges made and the monthly envelope) and ongoing maintenance work in the church and school building. We also plan to arrange for a parish-wide survey that will assist us to identify priorities and to discern where we ought to focus our attention. Some ideas that are percolating are Evangelization, Youth and Family ministry, the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd program, Latino ministry, and various forms of Outreach. Now is the time to begin thinking about your own ideas. What do you see? Where do you believe we are being called as a Parish? What has the Lord placed as a concern in your heart?

Both the Parish Council and the School Advisory Board will begin to look for new membership for the next year. Do you or someone you know have the gifts needed to serve in discernment of leadership and direction for our Parish and School? Are there gifts you see in your fellow parishioners that ought to be put at the service of St. Timothy Church? What has God given to you for the sake of others?

Celebrating our Golden Jubilee: Getting to know Saint Timothy’s Community of Faith.

We are looking at St. Paul’s Letter to the Ephesians, since Ephesus was the see where St. Timothy served as Bishop. This may offer some perspectives on the Church and the Community among whom Timothy lived and ministered.

For this reason I kneel before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named, that he may grant you in accord with the riches of his glory to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in the inner self, and that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the holy ones what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.

Now to him who is able to accomplish far more than all we ask or imagine, by the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen. (Ephesians 3:14-21)

St. Paul had a sense of responsibility for all those to whom he preached the Gospel. He prayed with an awareness of the extent of God’s love for all His People. The Faith he preached has the power to overcome all obstacles. All who respond to the gift of Faith are caught up in the very Love of God. Paul’s prayer is that the Ephesians continue to grow in Faith and that they comprehend the power of God at work in them through Faith. This prayer is fitting for us too, living as we do in a world that often misunderstands the Church and her teachings. May we open our own hearts to a depth of understanding of the riches we receive through Faith. May we come to acknowledge the glory of God Who works in us for the salvation of all.

How well do you know Saint Timothy?

At the St. Timothy Women’s Prayer Breakfast, there was a Quiz about our Patron Saint Timothy. Test your own knowledge about the Saint. Each week, a question or two will be put in the bulletin. You’ll have to come back next week to get the answer!

Let’s continue to welcome our Neophytes into the life of our community. Of special note is the fact that a number of Latino families have begun to call St. Timothy Church their spiritual home. We are in need of Spanish speakers who can assist us in the effort to welcome them and to invite them to share their traditions and culture with us.

This weekend, we celebrate the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick at all Masses. This Sacrament gives strength in time of illness and assists us to prepare for the final journey to the Kingdom. The Healing that flows from the Resurrection of Jesus Christ is evident in the communal experience of this Sacrament.

We also give thanks for those among us who work in the field of health care and those who visit the sick and homebound on behalf of our community. They show the Lord’s love and compassion and they let those they serve know that St. Timothy Church is with them and holds them in prayer. Let us pray for all our brothers and sisters who are ill and for those who care for them.

Celebrating our Golden Jubilee: Getting to know Saint Timothy’s Community of Faith.

Of this I became a minister by the gift of God’s grace that was granted me in accord with the exercise of his power. To me, the very least of all the holy ones, this grace was given, to preach to the Gentiles the inscrutable riches of Christ, and to bring to light for all what is the plan of the mystery hidden from ages past in God who created all things, so that the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known through the church to the principalities and authorities in the heavens. This was according to the eternal purpose that he accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord, in whom we have boldness of speech and confidence of access through faith in him. So I ask you not to lose heart over my afflictions for you; this is your glory. (Ephesians 3:7-13)

St. Paul began by persecuting Christians, and in the end, he himself endured persecution. He came to understand the meaning and purpose of suffering. He learned to offer up his suffering for the sake of his ministry among the Gentiles. Suffering leads to glory, both for Christ and for those who follow Him. The Ephesians were a community of believers who knew Paul well and so they shared a concern for him in his experience of persecution and suffering. Here, Paul acknowledges their concern and invites them to understand with him the higher purpose the Lord has for all that he undergoes.

In the old days, the good Sisters who taught so many of us, used to say, “Offer it up!” This was a practical and personal expression of the teaching of St. Paul that our suffering can serve a higher purpose.

A Word from Your Pastor April 8 Easter Sunday

Dear Parishioners and Guests:

Happy Easter! We are grateful for the presence of so many at the celebration of Easter Masses at St. Timothy Church. This is a testimony to the wonderful Truth that the Resurrection of Jesus Christ impacts all of us. Every human being has a future that goes beyond what this world can offer. Eternity beckons and through the Resurrection, it already “invades” our lives.

At the Easter Vigil, this year, we experience a wonderful sign of the vitality of the Faith of the St. Timothy Community. 25 people are being touched by the Sacraments of Initiation: six by Baptism, 15 entering full Communion in the Catholic Church through a Profession of Faith, 20 receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation, and 21 making their First Holy Communion. There are five children and 20 adults completing their journey through R.C.I.A. this year. What a sign of the Presence and Action of the Holy Spirit among us!

To all who are gathered: in this, our year of Golden Jubilee as a Parish Family, we invite you to renew your own pledge to live the Catholic Faith. If you are with us and are not Catholic, be sure that you are welcome among us, and we invite you to consider entering into the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (the R.C.I.A.) in the next round. There is a richness to our Catholic Faith that will fill your heart with something that the world cannot give. The First Easter was the beginning of a Mission that will continue until the End of Time: the charge to bring all peoples to understand the offer of Salvation through Jesus Christ the Lord.

The Church today is undergoing many of the same kinds of suffering as that endured by Jesus in His Passion. She is rejected and ridiculed. Her teachings are ignored and denied without an honest hearing. Our own political leaders are trying to silence the voice of Her members and to enforce unjust laws and mandates that are in direct opposition to our Nation’s founding principles of liberty and justice for all (born and unborn). Let us open our hearts to the Truth, and let us work together to bring the values we learn from our Faith to the wider society. May the Resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ, the proof of the Divine Power that belongs to Him as the Son of God, bring us to a living awareness of the Glory of God at work in us. May our lives bear fruit in the justice and peace that belong to the Kingdom of God.

Members of St. Timothy Parish are reminded that we are creating a Jubilee Photo Directory. If you are not a member of the Parish and would like to be, we invite you to register through the Parish Office and get into the Directory right away.

Because of this, I, Paul, a prisoner of Christ Jesus for you Gentiles—if, as I suppose, you have heard of the stewardship of God’s grace that was given to me for your benefit, namely, that the mystery was made known to me by revelation, as I have written briefly earlier. When you read this you can understand my insight into the mystery of Christ, which was not made known to human beings in other generations as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit, that the Gentiles are coheirs, members of the same body, and copartners in the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel. (Ephesians 3:1-6)

The earliest “scandal” of the Church was the realization that God has called not only members of His People to salvation, but Gentiles as well. Jesus Christ is for all human beings. This new awareness is what motivated St. Paul. The Church of Ephesus was the fruit of this knowledge. Our Patron St. Timothy, the first Bishop of Ephesus, witnessed this in practical way through his collaboration with St. Paul in many missionary journeys. The Church in Ephesus was among the first to see this wonderful mystery in full flower.

In our own time, we see the continuation of the expansion of the Gospel to peoples of many diverse nations and cultures. The celebrations of the Easter Season serve to deepen our knowledge and understanding of the ways in which God’s Spirit draws all human beings into the Mystery of Christ. The struggles of the Church in our day can serve to make us ever more aware of the power of Christ and His Resurrection when we respond to the action of the Spirit.

A Word from Your Pastor April 1

Dear Parishioners:

Holy Week brings us to the “High Holy Days” of our Catholic Faith. We will welcome many “guests” at the Masses of Easter Sunday, next weekend. Sadly, most Catholics have not yet come to realize the treasure we have in the days between this Sunday and next. If you are among those who have never attended the various celebrations of Holy Week, let this be the year.

Today, Passion Sunday, also known as Palm Sunday, is the celebration of Jesus’ triumphal entrance into the Jerusalem as the Son of David. We enter into the Passion with a shared reading of the narrative covering the final days of Jesus’ earthly life according to the Gospel of Mark.

Tuesday night, the Diocese of Columbus celebrates our Chrism Mass. This Mass is properly the Mass of Holy Thursday morning, but is able to be anticipated so that the clergy of the Diocese may come together for its celebration. At this Mass, the Priests and Bishop renew their commitment as shepherds, and the oils to be used for the Sacraments for the next year throughout the Diocese are blessed. Sacred Chrism is used for Baptisms, Confirmation and Holy Orders. The Oil of Catechumens is used in Baptism and in the R.C.I.A. The Oil for Anointing of the Sick gives comfort and healing to those who are touched by this Sacrament at the time of illness and in preparation for the final journey to the Kingdom. The whole Diocese, Bishop, Priests, Deacons, Religious and Laity are together as a sign of unity as Church.

The Sacred Easter Triduum runs from Holy Thursday evening through Easter Sunday.

On Holy Thursday we celebrate the evening Mass of The Lord’s Supper, with Washing of the Feet and our Second Grade First Holy Communion class will serve as Honor Guard in the Eucharistic Procession.

On Good Friday we will have Stations of the Cross at Noon and two opportunities for Celebration of The Lord’s Passion.

On Holy Saturday the Solemn Easter Vigil is the Mother of all Liturgies in our Church. In this Liturgy, we light the Easter Fire, honor the Paschal Candle, Bless the Baptismal Font, Baptize, Confirm and give First Holy Communion to many who are becoming new members of the Catholic Church.

At Easter Sunday Masses welcome many who visit us only once or twice a year.

The Week after Easter, Divine Mercy Sunday concludes the Octave of Easter. The Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick will be celebrated at all Masses. This Sacrament is for those who are seriously ill and for those who are nearing the time of their departure from earthly life for the Kingdom. In honor of Divine Mercy, Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament will take place following the Noon Mass ending with the Divine Mercy Devotion and Benediction. Confessions will be available for the Plenary Indulgence associated with this day.

Please be a part of all that we offer in these special days. God is worth our time. We need to express to Him and to ourselves that He is truly the center of our lives.

If you have not yet made arrangements to have your picture taken for our Golden Jubilee Directory, please do so. This will be a unique reminder to generations to come of who we are at the time of our half-century as a Parish. Remember, there is no cost to have the picture taken and you get a complimentary picture and a copy of the Directory for your family. No one is obliged to purchase anything more. But if your family is not in the album, what will future generations think? Many opportunities are open in the weeks ahead. Call or stop by to sign up. And don’t forget to Smile!

We are looking at St. Paul’s Letter to the Ephesians, since Ephesus was the see where St. Timothy served as Bishop. This may offer some perspectives on the Church and the Community among whom Timothy lived and ministered.

So then you are no longer strangers and sojourners, but you are fellow citizens with the holy ones and members of the household of God, built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the capstone. Through him the whole structure is held together and grows into a temple sacred in the Lord; in him you also are being built together into a dwelling place of God in the Spirit. (Ephesians 2:19-22)

We are the Temple of the Lord. God’s Spirit lives in us, not just as individuals, but as a Community of Faith. The Saints in Glory invite us into their company, and we already taste on earth the glory that will be ours in the Kingdom. God dwells in us, and we share Divine Life through Jesus Christ and in the power of the Holy Spirit. We are citizens of the Kingdom and we belong to God’s own household.
