A Word from Your Pastor August 26

Dear Parishioners:

By Baptism, we are pledged to God and to one another.  God has established a Covenant with us in Jesus Christ that unites us beyond all our divisions.  If we can learn to recall this, then the whole world opens to us in a different way.  We are responsible to God for one another.
Whenever anyone of us is honored or recognized, all of us share in the glory.  Last Sunday, the Diocesan Council of Catholic Women announced their choice for “Catholic Woman of the Year.”  It was our own Dr. Kathy Lutter.  As most of you know, Dr. Lutter has been involved in many aspects of the life of our parish, particularly in the education of our children in the ways of Faith.  Recently, she has stepped out in Faith to speak about the HHS Mandate and our efforts to preserve our Liberty to put into practice the values of our Catholic Faith and teachings.  She spoke at all the Masses one weekend at St. Timothy Church, and she has also addressed congregations in other parishes around Columbus.  We are proud of Dr. Kathy Lutter and of all who witness to our Faith in Jesus Christ and in His Church.

This week, we welcome back all our Children and our Staff to St. Timothy School.  We also look forward to the start of our Parish School of Religion (PSR) and the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA).  The task of Handing on our Faith to the next generation and sharing it with others is the responsibility of the whole community.  How do you respond to the charge to teach all nations and to baptize them in the Name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit?

As we continue our Year of Jubilee, we remember all who have been part of our Parish Family in the past.  Are there some who need to hear an invitation to return?

Celebrating our Golden Jubilee:  Getting to know Saint Timothy’s Community of Faith.

Up to now, we have concentrated our study on the Scriptures associated with Ephesus, since that was the diocese of which our Patron St. Timothy was the first Bishop.  We are now considering another Letter associated with that community, this time from one of the early bishops of the Church named Ignatius of Antioch.

The Epistle of Ignatius to the Ephesians, CHAPTER V.--THE PRAISE OF UNITY.

For if I in this brief space of time, have enjoyed such fellowship with your bishop--I mean not of a mere human, but of a spiritual nature--how much more do I reckon you happy who are so joined to him as the Church is to Jesus Christ, and as Jesus Christ is to the Father, that so all things may agree in unity! Let no man deceive himself: if any one be not within the altar, he is deprived of the bread of God. For if the prayer of one or two possesses such power, how much more that of the bishop and the whole Church ! He, therefore, that does not assemble with the Church, has even by this manifested his pride, and condemned himself. For it is written, "God resisteth the proud." Let us be careful, then, not to set ourselves in opposition to the bishop, in order that we may be subject to God.

Many in our time have the idea that they can have Christ in their lives, but leave aside the Church and the leaders of the Church.  This is a way of thinking that has been rejected since the first generations of Christianity.  St. Ignatius of Antioch reminds the Ephesians that they are not able to be one with Christ without being one with their Bishop.  He also states clearly that to pretend to celebrate the Sacraments, especially the Eucharist, apart from the Bishop, (as he expresses it, “be not within the altar”) is to be deprived of the Bread of God, that is, Christ Himself.   Pride is at work when we try to shape the Church to our own way of thinking.  There is an order set by God to the Church and to His creation.  We disregard that order to our own peril.  To be obedient to the Church and her leaders is to be obedient to Christ and to be subject to God.

1971:   Parish Festival Meeting:  Wednesday, 8:00 pm, Parish Hall.  Parish workers are needed for the 10th Anniversary Parish celebration.  PLEASE ATTEND.

1972:   Aloha from the Festival Committee!  Ticket sales of this year’s raffle prize of a 14-day Hawaiian vacation for two and $300 cash are going fine.  So keep up the good work.   Don’t deprive your neighbors, friends, or work associates of the chance for this wonderful prize.  Tickets do sell easily so exert a little effort to offer them.  Don’t forget, the seller of the winning ticket receives $100.

1975:    We welcome to the parish Sarah Marie Elosh, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Elosh who was baptized last Sunday.

1976:   Thank God!!!...for the absolutely perfect weather we had for the Parish Festival last weekend.  Thanks, too, to…Joe Hausberger…and Paul Bubenchik (co-chairmen) who worked very hard and did an outstanding job.

Father DeVille, by the way, thinks he did a pretty fair job of drawing the prizes.  They all went to members of the parish:  $1000, Jean Price; $100, Laura Pardi; Microwave Oven, Joe Capuano; TV set, John Hilbish; Quilt, Wincy Tiberi.

The CCD  program….needs a young married couple to assist with the High School group.  We would like this couple to be outstanding in wisdom and holiness of life and in knowledge of the Scriptures.  However, we will settle for ordinary human beings with a desire to make our religious education program effective and worthwhile on the high school level.

1977:  Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Dom Tiberi and Mr. and Mrs. James Ferraro on their 40th wedding anniversaries.

1987:   Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Dom Tiberi who are celebrating 50 years of married life this weekend.

The Hartnett family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to our fellow parishioners for the innumerable prayers and offers of help for Katie Marie Hartnett and her parents.

1990:   Special thanks to the leadership of the Women’s Club, its members and supporters for the donation of $2,000 received this past week. “Thank You!!!”
Dear Parishioners and Friends of St. Timothy’s:
Words cannot express my appreciation and gratitude to all of you who made my 30th anniversary of Ordination and birthday on the same day so very special.  So much work and time went into making it one of the most memorable days of my life; 51 members of my family came at your invitation and enjoyed the wonderful people of our parish and the beautiful weather as well.  The food was excellent; your gifts and notes that accompanied them were very special.  A special thanks to Father Ellifritz and all the people who called parishioners and family; those who worked to decorate and prepare for the party; the choir was superb.  But above all these wonderful things, I am particularly grateful for the love, support and encouragement you have given me.  I am very much indebted to each of you. May God bless you!
    With gratitude, Father Thomas Shonebarger

2001:   Wedding, Saturday at 2:30 pm, Allison DeTemple and Toren Hamre.

2003:    Labor Day is September 1.
The Family Life Office asks you to stop a minute and reflect on what lessons you learned about work from your parents and grandparents…perhaps you learned about being a conscientious worker, about working up to your own standards—not just settling for what the market will bear…or perhaps you learned about…how important your coworkers are, how to treat clients and customers with respect, or the value of continuing to learn new skills.  Your kids are learning lessons from you.  During this week that includes Labor Day, share with them one positive belief you have about work.  So much of our life is spent working; tell them what value you find in what the Mass celebrates as the work of human hands.

2006:    David Henley, a long-time St. Timothy parishioner and 1985 graduate of St. Timothy School made his final oath as a Brother of Glenmary Home Missions on August 21, in Nazareth, Kentucky.  On Saturday, August 26, he affirms his vows at St. Sebastian Church in Pittsburg where Keith and Pat Henley (his parents) live.

We congratulate children who have been baptized (recently):  Michael Sena, son of Brian and Melissa; Patrick Dunn, son of Eric and Kathleen; Thomas Haley, son of Daniel and Brandy; Dorothy Oberling, daughter of Matthew and Stacey; Kaylin Cullinan, daughter of Christopher and Wendy; Riley Adkins, daughter of Aaron and Colleen; Anthony Merendo, son of Merico and Vicky; Matthew Palma, son of Anthony and Sheela; Emily Stickler, daughter of James and Megan.
Don’t let your worries get the best of you.  Remember, Moses started out as a basket case.

2008:   Please remember in your prayers Johnny Randall, son of Julia and Matt Randall, who died on Sep.1, at the age of five years.  May he rest in peace and may his family find peace through the grace of God.  Johnny would have been a first grader at St. Timothy this year.

2009:   From your Pastor:
Many thanks to all for the birthday greetings, cards and gifts that you have given me.  I am truly humbled and grateful.  May God bless you for your generous hearts.

It is time to begin thinking about how we will celebrate our collective 50th Jubilee as we approach the time when our Parish proves it is Golden.  We were established as a Parish Family in 1961, so 2011 will be a special year in our life together.  Many of those who were among the founding families are still with us.  They have a story to tell and, no doubt, pictures to prove it.  Let’s gather these treasures now and be sure the generations to come will hear them.  (Still not too late!)

2010:   A Word from your Pastor:
….With the celebration of Labor Day, we acknowledge the importance of work.  It is through personal labor that we cooperate with God the Creator….Speaking of faithful workers, I want to thank those who have served at our daily Mass during the Summer months:  Bill Bringardner, Carl Connor, Maria Connor, Meghan Connors, Megan Davidson, Theresa Davidson, Claire DiOrio, Emma Foley, Pat Foley, Jim Reinmann, Joey Reinmann, Brayden Steller, Maya Steller and Steven Steigelman.  You are truly good and faithful servants of the Lord.  Thanks, too, to bill and Elaine James who have kept us supplied with the helpers we need.  Blessings on all our Servers at the Altar.

A Word from Your Pastor August 19

Dear Parishioners:

It is hard to believe that the Summer is coming to an end.  Monday, August 27th will be the opening of our School Year.  We have had many adventures in the sun (and the wind and the rain as well!).  There has been an intensity to this Summer as well due to the many funerals we have experienced for our members and for relatives of our parishioners.   “We know not the day, nor the hour.” (See Matthew 25:13)

Looking back to the Past, we face the realities of the Present and make plans for our common Future.  We continue our recognition of our Parish Golden Jubilee through the Fall.  In October, the Church Universal will open a “Year of Faith” to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Opening of the Second Vatican Council.  In the course of this Academic Year, 2012-2013, St. Timothy School will make plans for observance of the School’s Golden Jubilee in 2013-2014.

Our Mission as a Parish has been expressed in different ways through the years.

In February 1996, the Parish voted (27%) on this formulation:

The members of St. Timothy Parish come together in prayer, worship and service to proclaim the word of Christ, strengthen our community through the love of God, and grow together in communion with God.”

In February 2010, the Parish Pastoral Council came to a consensus on the following Statement:

United in the Body of Christ, we strive to promote the greater glory of God through a spirit of welcome and willing service to our brothers and sisters.”

It is interesting to note that the manner of expression over a couple of decades has deepened to focus on God and on outreach to our brothers and sisters.    The essence is the same.  But the starting point now is the unity that belongs to us as the Body of Christ and the action that flows through an attitude of welcome and willingness to serve.  So, let’s work together to set priorities and to respond to the call of God’s Spirit to be of service to one another and our world!

The Epistle of Ignatius to the Ephesians, CHAPTER IV.
-- EXHORTATIONS TO UNITY CONTINUED.

Wherefore it is fitting that ye should run together in accordance with the will of your bishop, which thing also ye do. For your justly renowned presbytery, worthy of God, is fitted as exactly to the bishop as the strings are to the harp. Therefore in your concord and harmonious love, Jesus Christ is sung. And do ye, man by man, become a choir, that being harmonious in love, and taking up the song of God in unison, ye may with one voice sing to the Father through Jesus Christ, so that He may both hear you, and perceive by your works that ye are indeed the members of His Son. It is profitable, therefore, that you should live in an unblameable unity, that thus ye may always enjoy communion with God.

St. Ignatius writes to the Ephesians of the unity that ought to be theirs through a response of obedience to their Bishop.  The presbyters (priests) in the community are renowned for their harmony with the Bishop and the people can imitate them in such a relationship.

The image of a choir singing together, allowing for the uniqueness of each separate voice to be brought to harmony is identified as something that can be accomplished by the choice to live in unity.  This unity of heart and mind is the means by which each member and the whole community may live in communion with God.

1979:   In just a few weeks the Columbus Public Schools will begin classes with a new dimension of a court-ordered Desegregation Plan.  We who follow Christ’s way of peace must set an example of concern and respect for law. Many people who oppose the plan for desegregation are not motivated by prejudice or racism, of course, and it would be wrong to make judgments in their regard.  Nevertheless, we Christians must be supportive of the peaceful implementation of the Desegregation Plan.  Our chief concern must be the children.  We must not allow them to become victims of opposing opinions.  Rather, we must give them the good example of respect for the law and concern for the rights of other people.

If you have children in public school I urge you to:
Use the FACT line to obtain accurate information about your children’s assignment
Volunteer to work with the PTA as greeters, bus stop monitors, lunch and class room aides
Remember that the love of God can never be separated from the love of neighbor.

1980:  Best wishes from all of us to Father Thomas J. Cadden, our Associate Pastor, as he celebrates 25 years in the priesthood.  May God bless him.  All of us are invited to join Father Cadden this afternoon at 3:00 at Christ the King Church, where he will offer a Mass of Thanksgiving.

A Word from Your Pastor August 12

Dear Parishioners:

This week the Church celebrates the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.  It is a Holy Day of Obligation, but even more than that, it is a celebration that invites us to contemplate the wonderful Mystery of the Gift of Life in its fullness.  God has destined us for Eternal Life.  Our earthly journey is a journey to something utterly beyond our imagination.  Our Catholic Faith reminds us that God is truly at work in our world and that He wills the salvation of the whole human person.

Mary is one of us.  She is fully human.  The ancient world worshiped many goddesses.  Mary is not a goddess.  Rather, she is the first human being to respond so completely to the call of God to accept His grace that she is the first among us after her divine Son to share in the fullness of Life that He alone offers.

The Assumption also allows us to see that the ministry God begins in each unique human being continues beyond this life.  Mary’s maternal role in the earthly journey of her Son Jesus is now at work forming us to prepare us to join her in Heaven.

Mary is our model.  What God has done in her, with her free consent, He does in us through the grace won for us by Jesus.  This will continue until the end of Time.

Mary is our Mother.  Jesus Himself has shared her with us and entrusted us to her loving heart, which He knew so well.  She is our advocate, interceding for us as we seek to follow her Son.

Through her cooperation with the grace at work in the humanity of Jesus, Mary shows us our own capacity to cooperate with the process of Redemption, sharing the fruits of Christ’s Life, Death and Resurrection with the world.

As we honor our Blessed Mother by coming to Mass and keeping her day holy, let us also share our hope with the world.  Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death.  Amen.

The Epistle of Ignatius to the Ephesians, CHAPTER III.

--EXHORTATIONS TO UNITY.

I do not issue orders to you, as if I were some great person. For though I am bound for the name of Christ, I am not yet perfect in Jesus Christ. For now I begin to be a disciple, and I speak to you as fellow-disciples with me. For it was needful for me to have been stirred up by you in faith, exhortation, patience, and long-suffering. But inasmuch as love suffers me not to be silent in regard to you, I have therefore taken upon me first to exhort you that ye would all run together in accordance with the will of God. For even Jesus Christ, our inseparable life, is the manifested will of the Father; as also bishops, settled everywhere to the utmost bounds of the earth, are so by the will of Jesus Christ.

Ignatius acknowledges the relationship he shares with the Ephesians as one that involves a fundamental equality as disciples of Christ.  He is aware of his own role as Bishop (of Antioch) and now as one soon to be a martyr in Rome.  He reminds the Ephesians of their call to unity with the hierarchy of the Church as the instruments of God’s will.  Obedience to God includes and is most evident to the world through unity of mind and heart with those entrusted with the task of leadership.  Just as Jesus obeyed the will of the Father, so the Ephesians and all disciples ought to obey the Bishops who manifest the will of the Father for the Church.  There is a mutuality in this relationship.  Ignatius sees his own journey to martyrdom as part of his responsibility for his own flock, and he experiences a sense of responsibility for the Ephesians and the other churches throughout the world.  He exhorts the Ephesians to live the unity for which Christ died, and for which he is also willing to lay down his life, having discerned the will of God in his own regard.

This Week in Our History:  August 12-19

1964:   The banns of marriage are announced between Leona Mahan of St. Agnes Parish, Springfield Missouri, and Joseph Reinhard of St. Timothy.

1973:   CBS is rebroadcasting the pro-abortion segments of “Maude”—and the American Catholic Bishops are protesting it, and have asked for our support.  The Bishops claim they “are not engaged in censorship…There is room and need for serious discussion of controversial subjects on television.  That is not the issue.   The issue is advocacy of one side of the controversy, presented under the guise of situation comedy and aired at a time when children make up a substantial part of the viewing audience.”

I (Rev. James Krause) am inclined to agree.  I think we have some responsibility to contribute to the moral climate of our community.  At least we have as much right to register our disapproval as do those who promote this kind of slanted propaganda against life.  If you agree, perhaps you will want to convey your sentiments to WNS-TV, or to the sponsors of the program.

1975:   In view of the plans of Watterson High School to inaugurate in September a bingo game four nights a week, including Thursday and Sunday, using key personnel from our team, the Parish Council voted to suspend our present bingo game.  In view of the anticipated loss of income, Father Grimes and Watterson have generously agreed to reimburse St. Timothy Parish for the coming year in the amount we last year received from our bingo.  Meanwhile, to our valiant crew, who have labored so hard and faithfully the past few years, our deep gratitude and blessings.  As a Parish, we shall now have to seek other means of supporting our enterprise.

The Council also passed a motion to instate a $100 per family surcharge for all School families.  This is to meet the budget Council previously approved…if parish income from new or other sources exceeds the budget of $265,000 it will be returned.

1976:   Law and Order!!!  Anyone found on Church property at St. Timothy after dark, without a just cause, will be arrested and prosecuted.  (That’s better than being shot, isn’t it?)  In the past month, several hundred dollars in theft and damage have occurred, including the taking of the ambry door and the holy oils.  (Sob!  We have $100 deductible insurance.)

All you would-be Jack Nicklauses, Johnny Millers and Ralph Guarascis who are interested in trying out for the reserve or varsity golf teams at Watterson should attend a meeting August 19 at 7:30 pm.  Qualifying assignments will be given.  If you cannot attend, call Mr. Yuskewich.

1977:    Have you noticed the nifty new (entrance) ramp?  The Men’s Club is responsible for this.  Our special thanks to Steve Sova who designed it, and Hugo Dells Flora who implemented the design.  Thanks to the Men’s Club, also, for the new confession room.  The work was well done by Pete Moro.

The outlook for the current fiscal year is not so good.  Our projected budget for the school year approaching is $174,565.  The school income is “projected at $51,875.  This means we will have to subsidize the school in the amount of $122,690…Because of the prohibitive costs of running an eight-grade school, we are again negotiating with St. Agatha Parish about some sort of consolidation for the 1978-79 school year.  The parish councils of both parishes will have the final say about any merger.

1978:   (One half of this bulletin was dedicated to a biography of Pope Paul VI who died the previous Sunday, August 6.)  Elected...on June 21, 1963, he outlined…his goals:  to define more fully the notion of the Church, to renew the church, to restore church unity and to start a dialogue with modern men and women.

As pope, he worked hard to implement the reforms begun by the (second Vatican) Council.  He traveled to every continent, wrote five encyclicals, preached constantly, reformed liturgical rites, promoted ecumenical harmony and retained his concern for social justice.

  His encyclicals:

   Ecclesiam Suam—1964—Paths of the Church

   Mysterium Fidei—1965—The Mystery of Faith

   Populorum Progressio—1967—The Development of Peoples

   Sacerdotalis Coelibatus—1967—Of Priestly Celibacy

   Humanae Vitae—1968—On Human Life

1979:   We are grateful to our Men’s Club for providing us with an enlarged parking area behind the rectory.  Our special thanks goes to Dan Kramer and K & R Paving for the large donation of time, expertise and equipment; and for filling in the area around the bridge.  It was a great job.   When you park behind the rectory, please park straight in, not on an angle.  Thanks.

We are very happy to announce that Mrs. Margaret Mooney has agreed to serve as our school principal this year.

1984:   A tremendous thank you to Keith Henley and his co-chair Elizabeth Palmer for heading up this year’s festival; to all the volunteers…to friends, parishioners and area businesses,…and to the four guys in sleeping bags who guarded the place over two nights.

1985:    To the Monday Morning Lay Distributors:

“I deeply appreciate the faithful visits of the Eucharistic minister team, making the Holy Eucharist a possible privilege to me.  May they be blessed a hundred-fold.  I had felt I had lost touch with our Church in later years.  These people have renewed this for me.  They are delightful, charming disciples of our priceless faith.  GOD BLESS THEM!  With deepest gratitude that we belong to the greatest Church on earth.”

                                              --A Shut-In Parishioner—

1995:   Did you notice the new flowerbeds surrounding the Parish schedule sign and the entrance and exit arrow signs?  They were the Eagle Scout project of Nathan French, son of Mike and Mary French.  Thanks to Nate, his mother and father, his brothers and a number of Nate’s fellow scouts who did all the work during some of our hottest days this summer.  It’s great to have a high school student interested in making the parish property more attractive!

1996:   The Catholic cardinals of our country told President Clinton, “Your veto (of the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act, HR 1833) is beyond comprehension for those who hold human life sacred.  It will ensure the continued use of the most heinous act to kill a tiny infant just seconds from taking his or her first breath outside the womb.”  Today our parish will join with thousands of other parishes around the country in signing postcards urging Congress to override President Clinton’s shameful veto of HR 1833.  Please be sure to sign a postcard and leave it with our volunteers.  Thank you for speaking on behalf of those who cannot speak for themselves!

1998:   Please remember in your prayers Dorothy DeStefano who died this past week.  May she rest in peace.

2007:   St. Timothy School is hosting the first Patty Grady Memorial Dinner on August, 17 in the Parish Center.  All funds raised from this spaghetti and meatball dinner will be applied to the Tuition Assistance Fund at St. Timothy School…Patty was a tireless volunteer for St. Timothy School. Come help remember her in a manner in which she deserves—by supporting the school that she worked so hard for.  The Grady and Andracki families thank you for your support.

2009:   Please join the parish and our Knights of Columbus hosts in celebrating our pastor Fr. Tim’s 50th Birthday on Sunday, August 23 after the 10:00 am Mass in the cafeteria.  It’s not a secret: tell your friends to join us, too.

Fellow Parishioners,

In advance of Fr. Tim’s first anniversary as pastor at St. Tim’s, it seemed to be a good time to assess the first year and perhaps learn a little more about our pastor.   Fr. Tim graciously…responded to what I originally planned to be about 10 brief questions and answers.  The Irish got a hold of me tongue, so this turned into 25 questions…so mine alone is any blame (for the extreme length of the interview which cannot be reproduced here).

It is safe to say that he is enjoying his pastorship with us, but as always there is work to be done across all spectrums in doing God’s work and finding His ministry for each one of us as well as our parish family.

In Christ,  --Jim Connors, Parish Council President

2011:    After forty satisfying and enjoyable years, I am retiring as Treasurer of the St. Timothy Men’s Club and as Chairman of their annual golf outing.  The golf outings were successful because of the dedication of a wonderful crew of workers and committee members and because of the generous donation of money, door prizes and hole sponsorships.  The outings have raised in excess of $140,000 over the years.  A special note of thanks to Jerry DeTemple who has worked untiringly for so many years in so many ways for the success of the tournament.  Thank you and God bless you all for your participation and assistance.

 Sincerely, Hugo Della Flora

A Word from Your Pastor August 5

Dear Parishioners:

What is happening at St. Timothy’s now that all our big parish events have been completed for the Summer?

Most of you know that the Men’s Club and the Athletic Association have been working toward a new and safer floor for the Parish Activities Center and Gym.  This has been in the works truly since before the addition was built.  Due to the generosity of many donors through the years, annual fund-raisers and responsible stewardship and a few grants through the Diocese of Columbus, the time has come.

St. Timothy Activities Center – The New Floor in process

Even as this message is being written, work is going on to put the new floor in place.  The installers have just completed a major job at Children’s Hospital and now they are hard at work for us.  They started the week after the Festival and hope to complete the task in a couple of weeks, in time for the new season of use that begins at the end of August.  Members of the Men’s Club and the Athletic Association have been around to ensure that everything is being done according to plan.  They are also sharing news of all that is happening so anyone who wishes to assist can help to replenish the resources needed for the events of the upcoming academic year.  A display is available in the vestibule of the church to share the vision with any who are interested.

This project is once again an example of the best St. Timothy’s Community has to offer: a labor of love that shares a vision with many for our children and the wider community.  Each generation of our Parish and School Community realizes its responsibility to make available the resources that will enable us to live and teach our values: Faith in God and in one another, teamwork and openness to all who come to visit.   We offer thanks to all who have brought this project to fulfillment and we look forward to continued growth as a welcoming Parish and School Family.  Congratulations and Job Well Done!

Stay tuned for other adventures as we close out the Summer and get ready to plunge into the Fall!

The Epistle of Ignatius to the Ephesians, CHAPTER II.
--CONGRATULATIONS AND ENTREATIES.

As to my fellow-servant Burrhus, your deacon in regard to God and blessed in all things, I beg that he may continue longer, both for your honor and that of your bishop. And Crocus also, worthy both of God and you, whom I have received as the manifestation of your love, hath in all things refreshed me, as the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ shall also refresh him; together with Onesimus, and Burrhus, and Euplus, and Fronto, by means of whom, I have, as to love, beheld all of you. May I always have joy of you, if indeed I be worthy of it. It is therefore befitting that you should in every way glorify Jesus Christ, who hath glorified you, that by a unanimous obedience "ye may be perfectly joined together in the same mind, and in the same judgment, and may all speak the same thing concerning the same thing," and that, being subject to the bishop and the presbytery, ye may in all respects be sanctified.

We are all familiar with the names of the Apostles and many disciples of Jesus among the first generation of Christians.  Ignatius’ Letter to the Ephesians adds a few new names of particular persons who served to build up the Church in her beginnings.  The Deacon Burrhus, the Bishop Onesimus, and Euplus and Fronto, members of the Ephesian community who are with Ignatius on his journey to martyrdom in Rome, all are noted as representatives of the Faith of the Ephesians that encourages him on his way.  A living relationship among the faithful and the clergy – deacons, presbyters and the bishop – has a power to reach beyond the community for the proclamation of the Gospel.

This Week in Our History: August 5-12

1963:   Many of our families are moving into new homes in the parish and would like to have their homes blessed.  Call the rectory and suggest a time and we will be happy to come.

1964:   During the school year tap and ballet lessons will be offered to the children in all grades.  Classes conducted by Mrs. Helen Blair will be held on two afternoons each week after school.

1965:   Newly Baptized:  Ann Marie, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Marchese

1969:   The following is the result of the survey conducted by the Parish Council concerning the questions of the observance of holy days in the U. S.   Of the 90% who favored a change, 50% thought the observance of the holy days should remain as it has been with the exception that they no longer carry the obligation to hear Mass.  35% favored the idea of the holy days and the obligation to hear Mass be shifted to the following Sundays.  About 5% were of the opinion that the observance be omitted as not being relevant in our world today.  One parishioner who thought this way suggested that the holy days be observed with the national holidays.

1971:   On Saturday, August 14, Father Kraus will complete 20 years of Priesthood.  The 7:30 Mass will be a special anniversary Mass:  it will be concelebrated and communion will be distributed under both species; the Board of Worship has planned to make this Mass a real celebration and a preview of what they hope a major Liturgical celebration in our parish can and should be like.  After the Mass…the Women’s Club will hold a reception for Father in the parish hall to which all parishioners are also invited.

1976:   Oh No!!!  Not again!!! They’re not going to change the Mass schedule again?!  Well, just slightly.  The 6:00 pm Mass will be discontinued effective the first of September….This was decided by Father DeVille and the Board of Worship for a number of reasons, including the lack of priests to offer it and the fact that we don’t need that many Masses on the weekend.  People from other parishes who attend this Mass are invited to suggest to their own pastors that they have a Sunday evening Mass.  (And the schedule has remained unchanged ever since.)

2001:   On this Sunday, we recognize four Boy Scouts from St. Timothy Parish who have earned the Catholic Boy Scout Award--the Ad Altari Dei.  Congratulations to Ryan and Brett Ballantyne, Michael Lowder and Harrison Pease.  The award will be presented at the 12:00 noon Mass.
Mark your calendar for Sunday, August 26.  Parish Council is sponsoring an ice cream social for Fr. Shonebarger.  It is his 65th birthday and we all want to thank him for his time, his dedication and his determination to give us this 1st rate facility.  The ice cream social will be from 1:00 to 3:00 pm.  Hope to see you in the Parish Center!

2010:   A Message from Molly Davis and Family
To the Parishioners of St. Timothy,
For those of you who do not know me, my name is Molly Davis; my husband Andy passed away 7/18/10.  Since that day, I have been the recipient of so much love and human kindness that I don’t begin to know where to start thanking people.  So, simply, thank you.
So many thoughtful cards, generous donations, and offers to help with childcare, landscaping, and household chores in addition to countless meals, lovely cards, shoulders to cry on, arms to hold, and ears to listen.  I am overwhelmed.   I have also never in my life been more proud to be Catholic.
The past 2 weeks, while they have been the longest in my 36 years, have also brought me into some of the most meaningful conversations of my life.  Again and again I have been told by countless people, “If I knew Church could be like this, I would go!”  Lapsed Catholics, atheists; people from all walks of life have shared with me the beauty they saw in St. Tim’s and the desire to become a part of it.    It is truly a testament to Father Tim and all of you that so many were impacted by the love they saw not just at the viewing or the funeral, but at the reception afterwards, and in the myriad ways that my boys and I are being lifted up in this difficult time.
What we have here at St. Timothy is truly special; an oasis of quiet dignity and healing love in a chaotic world, and it is with the strength that I draw from this community that I am able to hold myself high and carry on.  Thanks to you all.
From the back of the cry room and the bottom of our hearts,
              Molly, Johnny, Oliver, and Sam

Louise Shira (founding member) of our parish passed away this past week.  Please keep the family in your prayers.

Congratulations to Danielle Connor and Mike Dunneen, who were married here this weekend.

2011:    Clifford Pease, husband of (parishioner) Marlene Pease (and father of St. Tim’s alumni Heidi ‘92, Carlton ‘95 and Harrison ‘02) has passed away.   Please keep the family in your prayers.
